Last Condor Trip For A While

Not that I knew it at the time, but last weekend's condor trip will be the last for a while as this week a piece of Highway 1 fell into the ocean and as a consequence, I'd have to take a massive detour to get down to condor country.

See a slide show of the road failure by the local paper here.

Anyway, back to the condors. There was/is a dead whale washed up on the shore that could be providing food for the condors, so Ali and I headed down the coast to see if it was. It wasn't (and apparently, still isn't as time of writing) - it probably needs to "ripen" a bit more.

However, we got lucky elsewhere and had a couple of condors hang out right where we were. There was some wind, but not quite enough for them to soar on to get up and out of where they were - perfect conditions for us, not so much for them - as they'd try to soar and then realize they weren't getting anywhere and come back in and land.

I took the big lens (it features in a couple of the photos) down the coast for the whale ('cos it's not that close to where you can see it from), but used my "condor" lens (a 100-400mm zoom - the one I bought with the money that Nanna Walley left me, so I always think of her when I'm shooting with it) for the bird photos.

Photos are on Facebook - see them here.
