Two Tanks of Gas!
That's what I burned through on Sunday - one on the way down to San Simeon and one on the way back up again.
Some of the regular readers of this blog might know San Simeon as the location of Hearst Castle, but I was told by a few friends that it's also the winter home of a large colony of elephant seals.
I've seen elephant seals before, at another colony near Santa Cruz called Ano Nuevo, but at this time of year (birthing and breeding), you have to book a tour and hike a mile or so to see 'em - with the San Simeon crowd, they're right by the highway and there's a viewing area - you just turn up and park, walk 30 yards and you're right there.
Perfect for me wearing motorcycle clobber.
Weather was good, Highway 1 was more or less empty so it turned into a great ride. I didn't see any condors on my way down or back up again, and the salt spray off the ocean caused me to stop and clean my visor 5 or 6 times during the trip - and caused me to give the Ducati a good wash when I got home to get the salt off of it.
These things were minor distractions in a great day out.
See the elephant seals here.
